Marty Travers, SGM Ret., 62, Manhattan, passed away on Thursday,
December 8th, at Mercy Regional Health Center.
He was born July 5, 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of the
late Agnes (Shannon) and Martin Travers. When he was 10 years
old, he came to America and proudly became a United States citizen
in 1970.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the
University of Maryland and his Master of Science in Adult
Occupational and Continuing Education from Kansas State
University.
He married Jeannie (Tillman) Travers on January 3, 1997, in
Manhattan. She survives. He was previously married to Wess
Collier. They were later divorced. (She is the mother of the
children.)
He attended St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan.
Marty served 22 years and retired as a Sergeant Major from
Fort Riley as a CID Agent in 1996. He received numerous
awards, including The Army Lapel Button; The Meritorious Service
Medal; The Army Commendation Medal; The Army Achievement Medal; The
Meritorious Unit Commendation; The Army Good Conduct Medal; The
National Defense Service Medal; The Southwest Asia Service Medal
w/3 Bronze Service Stars; The Development Ribbon; The Army Service
Ribbon; The Overseas Service Ribbon; The Kuwait Liberation Ribbon;
The Kuwait Liberation Medal. After his retirement, he worked as the
Alcohol and Drug Control Officer for the 89th Army Reserve in
Wichita, Ft. Jackson and Ft. Leavenworth, retiring in 2011. Marty
was a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 58 and the Audie Murphy
Club.
In addition to his wife, Jeannie, Marty is survived by a
daughter, Susan Travers of Massachusetts; two sons Martin Travers
(Jill) and Alexander Travers, both of Massachusetts; two step
daughters, Rachel Braddy, of Manhattan and Gretchen Braddy-Wear
(Adam), of Cheney, Washington; a grandson, Zachary Travers; a
granddaughter Colleen Travers; two sisters, Nancy Roman of
Massachusetts and Sheila Putsey of Ontario, Canada.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December
13, 2011 at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan, with Father
Loren Werth officiating. Interment will follow in the Kansas
Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley, Manhattan.
Friends are invited to call Monday 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home with family receiving
friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior
Project Fund and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral
Home.
