Gary John Plumberg passed away on March 26, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital after a short illness. He was born April 20, 1945, the son of the late John Edward and Joy Winona (Springer) Plumberg. Gary was a 1963 graduate of Manhattan High School and 1967 from Kansas State University. He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan. Throughout his life, Gary displayed many interests, skills, and talents. He was an accountant by profession, but a renaissance man throughout his life. Gary had a love for learning, leading to six degrees from Kansas State University. He earned enough hours such that the university’s GPA calculator could no longer tabulate his GPA correctly. His quest for learning and his reverence for all of life around him never ceased. Beyond his accounting profession in the Manhattan community, Gary was an avid musician and performer. From high school throughout college and for many years following, Gary was known as a drummer in a variety of bands. He established his own Gary Plumberg Quartet and played many years in the Manhattan Municipal Band, the Stan Broadhurst Quartet, the Von Bolton dance band, and playing with jazz musician Matt Betton. Following his retirement from accounting work, and playing in bands, Gary remained active with his hobbies and interests in philosophy, karate, music, bicycling, running, religious stamp collecting, and judo. Gary’s quest for learning and reverence for life never ceased, an example of gentleness and kindness for us all. Gary is survived by cousins and many close friends. Services for Gary will be held Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 10 AM at Seven Dollars Catholic Church, 221 S. Juliette, with a burial to follow in Sunset Cemetery. A memorial in honor of Gary has been established with the Manhattan Municipal Band. Donations may be sent to Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, 1317 Poyntz Ave Manhattan KS 66502.
